Yay, it turned! It had about 30 seconds left; I forced it (successfully - yay!) at 5 seconds left.

There is no guaranteed way to do it. Get an egg, determine the exact time when it will die, and fog it. A few minutes before its time of death, unfog it and ER it. It's your personal choice how many minutes you give it, which ER(s) you put it in, whether to use an auto realoader etc.. Experiment. The rest is up to luck, as far as I know. I also recommend visiting the #NDWorld IRC channel.
